China Vows to Stand Firm Against Trump’s Tariff Threat

Trade tensions rise again

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that starting November 1, his administration will impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports. The move comes in response to China’s restrictions on rare earth exports, essential for advanced technology and defense production.

Beijing reacted sharply. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce declared that it “does not want a trade war, but is not afraid of one.” Officials accused Washington of “double standards” and warned that U.S. actions threaten global economic stability.

Trump calls for a “less confrontational” China

During a press conference, Trump said that the U.S. “does not want to hurt China”, but wants to “help it fix its systemic issues.” At the same time, he emphasized that America will defend its technological and economic security if Beijing continues what he called “unfair trade practices.”

Vice President JD Vance supported the move, describing China’s control over critical supply chains as a “national security crisis.” He noted that the U.S. remains open to dialogue if Beijing “shows understanding and respect for the rules.”

China warns of retaliation

Beijing responded that it will take “appropriate countermeasures” if Washington continues to escalate tensions. China has also introduced new port fees on U.S.-linked vessels, a direct response to American trade restrictions.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated:

“We will defend our legitimate rights and interests. The United States cannot dictate the rules of the global market.”

Global implications

Experts warn that this confrontation could disrupt supply chains in key industries such as electronics and electric vehicles, where rare earth materials are vital.
The upcoming APEC summit, where a meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping was planned, may now be at risk.

U.S. financial markets have already reacted with declines, reflecting fears of a renewed trade war similar to that of 2018–2019.
