Trump and Zelensky Meet in Washington: U.S. Rejects “Tomahawk” Missiles and Calls for a Ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on October 17 to discuss a new phase of military aid and a possible peace plan. Zelensky’s main goal was to secure the long-requested “Tomahawk” cruise missiles, which would allow Ukraine to strike deep into occupied territories.

However, Trump rejected the request, emphasizing that such a move could escalate the war and jeopardize U.S. stockpiles. Instead, he publicly called on both Ukraine and Russia to “stop where they are” and begin direct peace talks.

Zelensky admitted that Trump’s proposal could serve as a starting point for negotiations but added that “the main obstacle remains Russia’s willingness to end the war.” The meeting was described as firm and pragmatic, with no major decisions on new arms deliveries.

After the talks, Trump posted the following statement on his Truth Social account:

“The meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine was very interesting and cordial, but I told him—as I likewise strongly suggested to President Putin—that it is time to stop the killing and make a DEAL! Enough blood has been shed, with property lines being defined by War and Guts. They should stop where they are. Let both claim Victory, let History decide! No more shooting, no more Death, no more vast and unsustainable sums of money spent. This is a War that would have never started if I were President. Thousands of people being slaughtered each and every week—NO MORE, GO HOME TO YOUR FAMILIES IN PEACE!”

This statement reflects Trump’s new stance — positioning himself as a “leader who restores peace”, urging both sides to halt hostilities and “make a deal.”

Meanwhile, the White House is reportedly preparing a Trump–Putin summit in Budapest, expected within the next two weeks. The meeting could mark a significant turning point in wartime diplomacy.

Experts note that Trump’s proposal to “freeze the front lines” would effectively recognize current territorial positions, potentially solidifying Russia’s control over occupied regions. Still, Trump’s supporters argue that the main goal is to stop the bloodshed and achieve peace.
