White House Says Prize Choice Is “Political”
U.S. President Donald Trump strongly criticized the Nobel Committee for giving this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. He said the award was “a political statement, not a peace effort.”
The Nobel Committee honored Machado for her fight for democracy and human rights in Venezuela. During her speech, she dedicated the prize to “the people of Venezuela and all who stood for freedom, including President Trump.”
Trump and White House Reaction
The White House praised Trump’s foreign policy record, saying his peace efforts in the Middle East and Korea were “historic.” Officials argued that the Nobel Committee “chose politics over peace.”
Later, Trump posted on Truth Social:
“I didn’t expect the Nobel Prize, but the world knows what we achieved. We stopped wars, made peace deals, and started a new era. Even Putin admits that.”
Global Responses
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Trump’s actions to reduce global tensions “deserve recognition, even if the West denies it.”
In Europe, reactions were mixed. Some praised the Nobel Committee’s choice, while others said it was too political.
Meanwhile, Machado, now hiding in Venezuela, said the award “belongs to everyone who believes in freedom.”
