Zelensky Arrives in Washington
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Washington, D.C. for a high-stakes meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on October 17.
This is the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Trump returned to office, taking place as the war in Ukraine enters a critical phase.
Main Agenda – “Tomahawk” Missiles and Air Defense
The top priority of the talks is the potential delivery of U.S. “Tomahawk” long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine.
Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said Kyiv hopes for a positive decision during or soon after the visit.
However, U.S. officials remain cautious, noting that such a move could escalate tensions with Russia and strain limited stockpiles.
Trump stated that the U.S. seeks “a balance between defending Ukraine and maintaining global stability,” adding that “the road to peace is always harder than the road to war.”
Russia Strikes as Zelensky Heads to the U.S.
As Zelensky’s plane approached the U.S., Russia launched massive missile strikes against Ukraine’s gas and energy infrastructure.
The attacks underscored Ukraine’s urgent need for additional air-defense systems, including Patriot and NASAMS batteries.
Zelensky said, “Every defense system today means saved lives tomorrow.”
Trump Plans Meeting with Putin in Budapest
Trump has confirmed plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest within the next two weeks, following his talks with Zelensky.
The goal is to discuss ways to end the war and pursue “a new security framework for Europe.”
European leaders have reacted cautiously, warning that peace negotiations must include Ukraine and should not undermine Western unity.
International Reactions
- NATO and the European Union welcomed Trump’s willingness to talk about peace but urged him to maintain strong support for Ukraine.
- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán confirmed that Trump will also meet him in Budapest to discuss energy and security cooperation.
